North Korea's Planned Rocket Launch Could Put 'Observation Satellite' Above Earth

North Korea

North Korea plans to move ahead with a rocket launch sometime between Dec. 10 and 22, the AP reports.

An unnamed North Korean spokesperson said the launch will put an "polar orbiting observation satellite" in space, but Washington and U.N. feel it's to test illegal long range rocket capabilities. The last launch was an abysmal failure, with the rocket breaking up and crashing into the sea.

North Korea has a long history of testing nuclear weapons and rockets to the protest of the global community. Nonetheless, the country's gross domestic product is equivalent to North Dakota, but with a population four times as large — the truth is they often have difficulty feeding their own people.

The rocket marks the second launch in Kim Jong-un's stint as supreme leader.
